Condurango is a tropical climbing plant that can be found in jungles and thick forests at altitudes of 2000-3000m. It is typical of the lower slopes of the Andes in Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. Condurango owes its local name, or climbing the condor rampicate eagles since the condor often perched on it.

Condurango contains a new group of glycosides and steroids. After more than 100 years since it was introduced in the West as the plant active against cancer, in the 80s a group of Japanese scientists has published numerous studies and patented these new compounds as anti-tumor substances. The bark of the climbing also contains an average of 1-3% of these glycosides. However, research has not progressed and real anticancer effects in humans is still unknown.

Have been documented anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions. In test tube has been shown to be highly active against the mycobacteria that cause tuberculosis, but inactive against the virus strains. Its traditional use as an aid to digestion has been studied and validated in the mid-'80s, when the researchers pointed out that condurango was able to increase the enzymes and digestive juices in the stomach.

Condurango has a long history of use for a variety of digestive disorders and stomach. Being a bitter stimulant that increases the gastric juice helps digestion. It is also used to relieve nausea and vomiting, stomach irritable calm, relieve pain and cramps in the stomach for gastric ulcers and increase the bile in the gallbladder, liver and pancreas.

In the system of Peruvian herbal medicine today condurango is considered as an analgesic, appetite stimulant, carminative (expels intestinal gas), cologogo (increases bile in the gallbladder), haemostatic (stops the bleeding), stomach (helps digestion) and tonic . It is often used for a variety of digestive disorders and is recommended for stomach ulcers that bleed.
